Include women in Wajir peace talks, says MP
Women should play a bigger role in bringing peace to Wajir and Mandera counties, Wajir women’s representative Fatuma Ibrahim has said.
She women from Degodia and Garreh communities said they have been sidelined by the peace committee, chaired by Garisa Senator Yusuf Haji and former National Assembly Speaker Francis ole Kaparo.
Wajir women’s representative Fatuma Ibrahim said the women are an integral part in the society.
She said it is time to resolve the six-year conflict in which lives and property worth millions of shillings have been destroyed.
Ibrahim said the peace committee has held several meetings but did not involve women from the region.
“Sometimes only the two women’s representatives from Wajir and Mandera counties attend the meetings. There is need to increase the number if a solution is to be found,” she said.
Ibrahim was speaking to the press after a four-day meeting with women leaders from the two counties at the Great Rift Valley lodge in Naivasha yesterday.
