Iraq Condemns Israel’s Recognition of Somaliland, Reaffirms Support for Somalia’s Sovereignty

Storyline:Unity of Somalia, World

GOOBJOOG NEWS|BAGHDAD: The Republic of Iraq has strongly condemned Israel’s recognition of Somaliland, describing the move as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and a clear breach of international law.

The Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the recognition of what it referred to as the “so-called Land of Somalia” undermines the unity and territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia and contravenes the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Iraq, which currently holds the rotating presidency of the League of Arab States, said Israel’s decision represents a serious violation of Somalia’s sovereignty and threatens efforts to maintain security and stability in the Horn of Africa and the wider region.

The statement warned that such unilateral and illegal actions pose a direct risk to regional stability, contribute to heightened tensions, and could have negative implications for international peace and security.

Baghdad reiterated its firm position in support of the sovereignty and national unity of states, stressing its complete rejection of any attempts to impose political realities that run counter to the will of peoples and established international norms.

The Iraqi government also called on the international community, as well as regional and international organisations, to assume their legal and moral responsibilities by taking a clear stance against what it described as illegal practices. It urged collective action to uphold international legitimacy and protect the sovereignty of member states.

Iraq’s condemnation adds to a growing chorus of Arab, regional and international actors rejecting Israel’s recognition of Somaliland and reaffirming support for Somalia’s unity and territorial integrity.
