GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Iraq’s Minister of Interior, Abdul Amir Al-Shammari, is in Mogadishu for high-level talks aimed at strengthening bilateral ties and deepening security cooperation with Somalia.

The Iraqi delegation was received at Aden Adde International Airport by Somali Minister of Interior, Federalism and Reconciliation, Ali Yusuf Ali along with senior officials including the Minister of Internal Security and the Governor of Banadir Region.

Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre later held extensive discussions with Al-Shammari, focusing on collaboration in counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, and security sector reform.

“This visit marks an important step in strengthening the historic ties between our brotherly nations,” Barre said. Al-Shammari pledged Iraq’s full support in enhancing Somalia’s security capabilities, drawing on Baghdad’s experience in fighting insurgent groups and rebuilding post-conflict institutions.

The talks come as Somalia intensifies efforts to defeat al-Shabaab militants and stabilize the country. Officials said the two governments are working to establish a framework for security cooperation, including specialized training, technical assistance, and joint strategies for border management.

“This partnership offers Somalia access to critical knowledge in counterterrorism and national security strategy,” a Somali security official told Reuters.

The Iraqi delegation is scheduled to visit key security installations and continue meetings with Somali defense and intelligence officials before concluding their official mission.

Analysts say the visit signals growing international engagement in Somalia’s security transition and could mark a turning point in regional counterterrorism collaboration.
