GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia secured fresh humanitarian commitments on Tuesday after Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre held talks with International Rescue Committee (IRC) CEO David Miliband, resulting in agreements to scale up drought-relief operations across the country.

The IRC pledged to expand emergency aid, widen its drought-response programmes, and strengthen support for long-term resilience initiatives aimed at stabilising vulnerable communities. Miliband also committed to advocating for greater global attention and funding for Somalia’s crisis.

Prime Minister Barre welcomed the pledges, agreeing with the IRC to improve coordination so assistance reaches the 4.4 million Somalis in urgent need. Both sides underscored the importance of combining short-term relief with sustainable solutions that help families regain stability.

The renewed commitments come as the government intensifies its nationwide drought-response strategy.
