Israeli Push for Kabylia Recognition Echoes Somaliland Sovereignty Dispute
GOOBJOOG NEWS|ALGERIA: Calls for Israel to recognise the independence of Algeria’s Kabylia region have drawn fresh attention following its recognition of Somaliland, a move that Somalia condemned as a violation of its sovereignty.
Opinion pieces published in The Times of Israel have urged consideration of Kabylia’s independence, while an Israeli lawmaker proposed recognition in January 2026. These initiatives do not establish that the Israeli government has decided to recognise the region.
The Movement for the Self-Determination of Kabylia, known as MAK, declared independence at an event in Paris in December 2025. That declaration did not secure formal international recognition, and Kabylia remains part of Algeria.
The debate echoes the diplomatic dispute triggered by Israel’s recognition of Somaliland in December 2025. Somaliland welcomed the decision as a breakthrough in its longstanding campaign for statehood, while Somalia’s federal government rejected it and reaffirmed its claim to the territory.
Israel and Somaliland have since developed diplomatic relations. In May 2026, Israel’s president received the credentials of Somaliland’s first ambassador to the country.
The Kabylia proposals raise a question central to Somalia’s objections: whether recognising separatist claims undermines the sovereignty and territorial integrity of existing states.
There is, however, a clear distinction between the two cases. Israel has formally recognised Somaliland, while the initiatives concerning Kabylia remain calls for recognition rather than an announced government decision.
