Italy Recognises Somali Embassy’s Role in Deepening Diplomatic Relations
GOOBJOOG NEWS | ROME: Somalia’s growing diplomatic and cultural ties with Italy were highlighted at a ceremony held at the Italian Parliament, where the Somali Embassy in Rome received an award recognising its contribution to strengthening relations between the two countries.
The event, known as Eccellenze 2026, brought together senior Italian government officials and representatives from Somalia to celebrate achievements in public service, cultural cooperation and community engagement.
Somalia’s chargé d’affaires in Italy, Ambassador Khalid Macow Abdulkadir, attended the ceremony alongside Mohamed Kaafi Sheikh Abukar, director of Somali National Television.
Discussions at the event focused on expanding cooperation in education, cultural exchanges and social integration, reflecting efforts by both countries to deepen ties beyond traditional diplomatic and political engagement.
Somalia and Italy share longstanding historical relations dating back to the colonial period, with Rome remaining an important European partner in Somalia’s reconstruction, education and institutional development.
Italy has also maintained a role in international efforts to support Somalia’s security institutions and political stabilisation, while educational and cultural exchanges have helped sustain connections between the two countries.
The ceremony highlighted the contribution of media organisations in promoting mutual understanding and maintaining links between Somali and Italian communities.
Somalia’s diplomatic mission was among those recognised for their contributions to bilateral relations, receiving an award for its efforts to promote cooperation and engagement between Mogadishu and Rome.
Other awards were presented to individuals recognised for outstanding community service and contributions to society during the year.
The recognition comes as Somalia seeks to strengthen its diplomatic presence in Europe and expand partnerships in education, cultural development and economic cooperation.
