Jeddah OIC Water Conference Seeks Lasting Impact on Islamic Nations’ Water Future

GOOBJOOG NEWS | JEDDAH: The fifth session of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Ministers of Water Conference has opened in Jeddah, under the theme “From Vision to Impact.” The three-day meeting, chaired by Saudi Arabia, brings together ministers and water experts from OIC member states to strengthen cooperation on sustainable water management.
The conference began with a preparatory session of senior officials to address shared challenges in water resource management and highlight Saudi Arabia’s role in leading global efforts on water security.
Deputy Minister for Water Affairs, Dr. Abdul Aziz bin Muhareb Al-Shaibani, said the Kingdom is focused on translating water strategies into measurable results through technology and innovation. He noted that Saudi Arabia’s integrated water resources management index rose from 57% in 2017 to 83% in 2023, one of the fastest improvements globally, prompting the United Nations to recognize the country as a model for advancing the UN’s sixth Sustainable Development Goal.
Al-Shaibani added that the Kingdom’s progress aligns with its Vision 2030 plan, which promotes efficient water use, private investment, and localized technologies to boost sustainability.
OIC Assistant Secretary-General for Science and Technology, Ambassador Aftab Ahmad Khokher, said the conference theme underscored the need to move from policy to implementation. He reaffirmed the OIC’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote water sustainability, conserve resources, and strengthen resilience to scarcity.
Khokher also thanked Egypt for chairing the previous conference and praised Saudi Arabia for hosting and leading the current session, noting its consistent support for OIC programs and international water cooperation.
Saudi Arabia’s leadership of the event reflects its growing role in promoting regional and global water initiatives, as part of broader efforts to achieve sustainable development and environmental security across the Islamic world.
