GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somalia’s military court has executed a soldier who shot and killed the late minister for Public Works, Abbas Abdullahi Siraji, on May 3, 2017.

Ahmed Abdullahi Aidid was executed by firing squad five years later, after the court found him guilty of killing Siraji, 31, on June 19, 2017.

The execution of Aidid took place at the Gen. Gordon military camp, Mogadishu, where government officials, relatives of both the victim and the accused, were present to witness the event.

The late minister’s brother, MP Mohamud Abdullahi Siraji, in a Twitter post, has welcomed the decision by the current government to award long-awaited justice to the family, something the previous government failed to do.

Early life

Young Siraji grew up in Daadab refugee camp, Kenya, where he returned to the country and vied for an MP seat in Kismayo in 2017. He emerged triumphant after he beat Mohamoud Bekos, a 12-year-old term MP.

In the same year, he was nominated as minister for Public Works, but his rising star was unfortunately cut short by an assassin’s bullet on the night of May 3rd, 2017.

His brother, MP Mohamud Abdullahi Siraji, was, however, elected to replace him for the Jubaland parliamentary seat.
