Justice Minister Hails Adoption of Somalia’s Constitution
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister, Hassan Sheikh Ali, has welcomed the adoption of the country’s constitution after it was approved by both houses of the Federal Parliament of Somalia, marking the end of a review process that lasted more than a decade.
In a statement issued after the vote, the minister described the ratification as a historic milestone concluding a constitutional review that spanned more than 13 years.
The review process brought together federal institutions, Federal Member States of Somalia, legal and constitutional experts, and representatives from across Somali society.
Ali congratulated lawmakers, saying the vote was an important step toward strengthening democratic institutions and clarifying Somalia’s federal system.
“The approval of the revised constitution marks significant progress for Somalia and moves the country beyond the long-standing provisional constitutional framework,” he said.
The minister also thanked both houses of parliament, constitutional review committees, executive institutions, federal member states and the Somali public for their role in advancing the process.
He further praised the leadership of President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre for supporting efforts to accelerate and finalise the review.
According to the minister, the adoption of the constitution represents a key step toward strengthening democratic governance, reinforcing national unity and entrenching the rule of law in Somalia.
