GOOBJOOG NEWS|NAIROBI: The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) said Tuesday that its special forces killed five al Shabaab militants during an intelligence-led patrol in the Boni Forest, Lamu County.

The operation, carried out in Lacta Mangai, also resulted in the recovery of weapons and supplies, including AK-47 rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers with warheads, ammunition, solar panels, tents, and materials used to make improvised explosive devices (IEDs), according to a KDF statement.

Several other militants escaped with injuries.

The raid was conducted under Operation Amani Boni (OAB), an ongoing campaign to flush out al Shabaab fighters from the dense forest, which the group has long used as a base after crossing from Somalia.

“The operation remains committed to restoring lasting peace and security in the Boni region, ensuring that families can live without fear,” KDF said.

Kenya has suffered repeated al Shabaab attacks in recent years. The al Qaeda-linked group is fighting to topple Somalia’s government and impose its version of Islamic law.
