Kenya Arrests Tiktok Creators after Videos Show Harassment of Women In Nairobi
GOOBJOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Kenyan police have arrested several TikTok content creators in Nairobi following public outrage over viral videos showing women and young girls being harassed in busy public areas.
The arrests were made on Tuesday evening in the Eastleigh, Pangani and Muthaiga neighbourhoods after clips circulated widely on TikTok and X, showing suspects accosting pedestrians and making inappropriate remarks while filming content for social media.
Ahmed Mohamed, an X user who shared updates on the case, said the arrests followed complaints from members of the public. He said the suspects were allegedly targeting women along streets under the guise of creating online content.
Police sources said the individuals are also suspected of staging risky stunts in front of moving vehicles on major roads in Pangani and Muthaiga, raising safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court on Wednesday on charges including harassment, public nuisance, indecent conduct and reckless behaviour that endangered public safety, the sources said.
The arrests come amid growing concern in Kenya over reckless content creation, as some social media users pursue viral attention through offensive or illegal acts. Women’s rights groups and online activists condemned the videos, describing them as degrading and warning that such behaviour poses serious risks, especially to young girls.
Public pressure has been mounting for authorities to take firmer action against creators who cross legal and ethical boundaries, while calls have also grown for platforms such as TikTok to strengthen content moderation.
Police have urged victims and witnesses to report similar incidents, stressing that online content creation does not place individuals above the law.
