KENYA: Five soldiers killed in IED attack in Lamu
Five Kenyan soldiers were killed and ten others injured Wednesday morning when their vehicle ran into an explosive device in the coastal region of Lamu adding to 11 the number of soldiers killed within a period of a month in the East African country.
Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) spokesman Col. Paul Njuguna quoted by the local media confirmed the incident noting a truck which the soldiers were driving in hit an improvised explosive device (IED) along Kiunga-Sankuri road.
“Following the incident, 10 KDF soldiers are receiving medical care from injuries sustained,” Col. Njuguna said in a statement.
In a similar incident early this month, six KDF soldiers were killed and five others injured. The militant group Al-Shabaab has launched similar attacks against Kenyan forces serving under a multi-agency force in the Lamu region.
