Kenya Says 11 Suspected Al-Shabaab Militants Killed in Border Security Operation

GOOBJOOG NEWS| MANDERA-KENYA: Kenyan special forces, backed by air support, have killed at least 11 suspected Al-Shabaab militants during a security operation near the Kenya-Somalia border in Mandera County, according to security officials.

The operation targeted a temporary camp near the border where intelligence indicated about 30 suspected Al-Shabaab fighters had gathered. Authorities said the militants were believed to be planning an attack on one of the border villages.

Kenyan police said 11 suspected militants were killed during the raid, while seven others sustained serious injuries. The remaining fighters reportedly fled across the border into Somalia.

Security forces recovered three PKM machine guns and approximately 409 rounds of ammunition from the scene.

Officials also said they seized documents believed to be Al-Shabaab tax collection receipts, which they described as evidence of the group’s administrative and financial operations. According to investigators, the documents provide fresh intelligence on how the militant group raises revenue, manages its taxation system and finances its activities.

Authorities said the recovered material could also help security agencies better understand how Al-Shabaab plans attacks inside Kenya.

Kenya has stepped up border security, intelligence gathering and joint security operations in recent years to counter the threat posed by Al-Shabaab, which has carried out numerous attacks in the country’s northeastern region since Kenya deployed troops to Somalia in 2011 as part of regional efforts against the militant group.

The government says the enhanced security measures have significantly reduced cross-border attacks while improving security and supporting economic activity in communities along the Kenya-Somalia border.
