Kenya says troops killed 52 Al-Shabaab in Southern Somalia

At least 52 Al-Shabaab militants have been neutralized in a raid carried out by Kenyan troops taking part in an AU mission in Somalia, Kenyan Defense Ministry in Nairobi said Friday Afternoon.

The attack which happened on Friday has destroyed Al-Shabaab camp in Badhadhe town of Somalia;s southern region Lower Jubba.

In a statement, the ministry said 52 members of the radical Islamist group were killed and several injured in an “intelligence-led operation.”

The Kenyan military said that the intelligence-led operation was launched after surveillance assets sighted Al-Shabaab terrorist concentration in Lower Jubba in Somalia close to the Kenyan-Somali border.

“Ground troops supported by mortar and artillery fire were employed to neutralize the camp thereafter,” the statement noted.

The troops were sent to Somalia in 2011 after a series of attacks on Kenyan soil.

Kenyan troops are taking part in a 22,000-strong African Union contingent that is helping Somalia’s government in its fight against the insurgency waged by the extremists.
