Kenya Urges Global Backing for AU mission in Somalia

GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Kenya called on the international community on Thursday to step up funding and logistical support for the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), saying regional security depends on the success of the operation.
Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi told diplomats in Nairobi that Kenya’s participation in AUSSOM was central to its foreign policy and to the fight against Al-Shabaab militants. He said predictable financing and stronger international backing were needed to keep the mission effective.
Kenya, which has long contributed troops to Somalia, argues that its own security is tied to Somalia’s stability. Officials say AUSSOM, which replaced ATMIS in January, is key to empowering Somali forces and ensuring a smooth transition of security responsibilities to Mogadishu.
Mudavadi said global partners must view support for the mission as part of a collective effort to secure the Horn of Africa, warning that financial shortfalls could undermine gains made against extremist groups.
