Kenyan forces launch massive security operations in Mandera county
Kenyan security forces in collaboration with the military launched massive operations in Mandera County and surrounding localities after the deadly attack on residential house claimed lives of six non locals in Mandera town.
The operation was conducted to hunt down the attackers believed to be hiding near the Kenya-Somalia border.
The forces are in hot pursuit of the perpetrators, Al-shabab fighters who attacked Kenyan police officers.
One of the locals in Mandera says heavily armed forces are seen patrolling the villages of Mandera district and conducting searches in the suspected areas.
Senior security officials noted that the security forces are vigilant to put to stop similar deadly attacks in the region.
This operation comes a time when six people were killed Thursday morning during a suspected al Shabaab attack in Mandera Town.
Mandera governor Ali Roba condemned the incident, terming it sad.
“We have suffered another sad attack,” Roba, wrote on Twitter, saying six people had been confirmed killed.
“If not for the quick response by our security forces, we would be talking of many more casualties now,” Roba told Reuters by telephone.
Since the Garissa University College attack on April 2, 2015 that claimed 148 lives, mostly students, the country has experienced a lull in attacks.
Attacks in border areas have been blamed on a porous frontier that assailants cross over easily to commit atrocities and slip back to the Somalia.
