Kenyan Interior Secretary affirms the decision to shut down Dadaab camp

Kenyan Interior Secretary Joseph Nkaissery  affirmed his government’s decision to shut down the 25-year-old complex

“Kenya is committed to close the camp,” Nkaissery said. “It is a decision we have already reached and we will jointly collaborate with the Somali government and the UNHCR on your safe return.”

Somalia has previously objected to the shutting down of the camp, saying forced repatriation is not in the best interest of either country.

Meanwhile, The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and Legal Advice Centre say the disbandment of the Department of Refugee Affairs is illegal.

Under a certificate of urgency, the rights body and Legal Advice Centre said the disbandment of the Department of Refugee Affairs is illegal, saying it can only be disbanded through a legislative process.

Kenya’s move to shut down the refugee camp was criticised by the international community and aid agencies.

When Somali president spoke in Turkey in February, said it is important to agree “on the best way to bring the refugees in an orderly and dignified manner and in accordance with international laws”. He said he does not want “relations with Kenya to be affected”.
