Kenyan Security Forces Foil Al-Shabaab Assault in Mandera

Storyline:World

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MANDERA: Suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked a security camp in Kenya’s northeastern Mandera County on Wednesday evening, but were repelled by security forces with no casualties reported, police and local security sources said.

The attack targeted the Jabi Quick Response Unit (QRU) camp in Lafey Sub-County, near the Kenya-Somalia border, shortly after 7 p.m. local time.

According to security reports, about 10 heavily armed militants approached the camp from the northeast and opened fire from an estimated distance of 600 meters in what authorities believe was an attempt to probe the facility’s defenses.

Security officers stationed at the camp responded with sustained gunfire, forcing the attackers to retreat into nearby bushland, officials said.

No security personnel were killed or injured during the incident, and no damage was reported at the facility.

Police said the situation was brought under control and security agencies maintained heightened vigilance throughout the night amid concerns of possible follow-up attacks.

The assault is the latest in a series of security incidents in Kenya’s northeastern region, which borders Somalia and has long been vulnerable to attacks by Al-Shabaab militants.

The militant group, which is based in Somalia, has frequently targeted Kenyan security forces, government installations and civilian infrastructure in border counties including Mandera, Wajir and Garissa. The militants have said such attacks are retaliation for Kenya’s military involvement in Somalia, where Kenyan troops have participated in regional peacekeeping and counterinsurgency operations for more than a decade.

In recent months, Kenyan security agencies have intensified surveillance and border patrols following intelligence warnings of increased militant activity along the porous frontier.

While attacks in major Kenyan cities have become less frequent in recent years, security officials continue to view the border region as one of the country’s most vulnerable areas due to cross-border militant movements and longstanding security challenges.

Investigations into the latest attack were ongoing.
