Kenya’s deputy Chief Justice arrested over alleged corruption

Prosecutors in Kenya Tuesday arrested the country’s deputy chief Justice Philomena for questioning over her alleged involvement in corruption including the circumstances surrounding the collapse of a commercial bank in the East African nation.

Local media reported that Mwilu who is also the Supreme Court deputy president was picked by the Director of Public Prosecution Noor Haji and Directorate of Criminal Investigations head George Kinoti amid recent high profile prosecutions in Kenya as President Uhuru Kenyatta seeks to rid his administration of graft in his second and last term.

Haji said in a media briefing shortly after the arrest that the top judge will ‘face charges over abuse of office and corruption’.

The arrest followed a morning meeting by the Judicial Service Commission which is responsible for hiring judges.

Local media reports say the judge who was appointed to the position October 2016 faces numerous counts of stealing, abuse of office and unlawful failure to pay taxes’. Additionally, investigators claim that the judge has acted in contravention of the Leadership and Integrity Act by accepting a personal loan of Sh12 million ($120,000) from Imperial Bank, local daily, Daily Nation reported.
