GOOBJOOG NEWS | NAIROBI: Kenya’s Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has called for the resignation of the country’s National Intelligence Service Director General Nordin Haji.

Speaking in the coastal town of Mombasa Gachagua alleged that Haji failed to notify the Kenyan President on the magnitude of the protests to necessitate appropriate response.

He claimed the NIS Director General also frustrated competent officers in the service and allegedly brought in cronies who have messed up intelligence gathering.

Gachagua also accused the Kenyan spy chief of mishandling intelligence that could have prevented the nationwide unrest on Tuesday, which resulted in over 20 deaths, 300 injuries, and the arrest of more than 50 people.

The Kenyan Deputy President also claimed that NIS was targeting Members of Parliament (MPs) who voted against the Finance Bill, harassing them for their political stance.

“I want to call on the National Intelligence Service not to take us back to the dark old days of the Nyayo era, where propaganda and schemes were used to undermine leaders and those you disagree with,” he said.

Further, Gachagua revealed that officers of the National Police Service had informed him they did not receive intelligence briefs about the scale of the protests.

“The intelligence service failed in its duty, and the reason is clear; Noordin Haji is unqualified to lead the organisation, which is why the security sector was unprepared,” he added.

Adding, “Noordin Haji must take responsibility for the deaths that occurred during the protests. He has failed President Ruto, the government, and the people and must resign.”
