Khat carrying plane overshoots the runway at Bardale Airport

A plane carrying khat has overshot a runway at Bardale Airport barely four days after Somalia lifted ban on Khat flights from the neigbouring country, Kenya.

The plane which flew from Nairobi  was about to land  when it developed mechanical problems and overshot, no casualties reported.

“It came down tumbling, raked through the runaway before it over turned and came to a halt,” said the Khat trader who was waiting the khat cargo from  the plane.

He added, “There was panic but no one was injured in the incident, the occupants were safe.”

Sources from the airport said the cause of the incident is under investigation.

“It developed a problem and it tried to land on a field but it slipped but fortunately no one injured in the accident,” said the officer who asked not to named because he was authorised to speak to the media.

Somalia receives over 30  cargo planes delivering the stimulant transported the neighbouring Kenya.

This week, Somalia rescinded its decision to ban Khat from the country following an agreement reached between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud in Mogadishu.
