Liibaan Welcomes Decision to Rerun Galmudug Elections
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Liibaan Ahmed Hassan, the Justice and Solidarity Party (JSP) candidate for the presidency of Galmudug, has welcomed a decision by Somalia’s National Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission to rerun elections in the federal state.
The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling on Aug. 24, 2026, which annulled the results of the combined Galmudug House of Representatives and local council elections and directed the electoral commission to organise a fresh vote.
Liibaan welcomed the decision and urged residents of Galmudug to prepare for the new electoral process, calling on voters and political stakeholders to participate peacefully.
The Supreme Court’s ruling has reopened the electoral process in Galmudug, where the conduct and outcome of the July 30 elections had become a subject of political and legal dispute.
Liibaan was previously selected by JSP as its official candidate for the 2026–2031 Galmudug presidency, placing him among the political figures preparing to contest the state’s next leadership election.
The rerun is expected to require the electoral authorities and political stakeholders to agree on a new timetable and procedures before voting can take place.
