Residents deploy local solutions and ingenuity to rescue ship in Bosaso

A combination of enterprise, home-grown solutions and determination ultimately saved a ship carrying goods worth millions of dollars in Bosaso Friday.

For five days, traders, local community and residents from all walks of life put their resources and skills together to pull a ship that had run aground in Bosaso port failing to dock within the harbour.

“We had to construct a temporary harbor transporting rocks and soil that was being used in road construction in Eldahir and Erigavo,” Sheikh Fu’ad, coordinator of the rescue team told Goobjoog News on phone.

Business people volunteered 20 lorries, seven bulldozers and six engineers who worked for nine days to rescue the ship with 1850 tons shipment originating from India.

The ship missed the harbor and drifted one kilometre away February 5 necessitating the construction of a temporary harbor which ultimately led to the rescue of the ship.

Locals provided food, water and any necessary help to aid in the rescue mission which Fu’ad said affirmed the power of unity and local solutions to challenges affecting the country.

The ship was from India and was carrying an estimated $8 million worth of goods tons including 57 cars.
