Lower House Okays Minerals and Meteorological Forecasting Bills

GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Somalia’s House of the People has today approved two key draft laws after debate and a vote at parliament headquarters.

One of the bills is the Federal Republic of Somalia Minerals Bill, which is designed to guide the exploration, extraction, management, and use of the country’s mineral resources. The legislation aims to strengthen transparency and accountability and ensure that the benefits from mineral wealth serve the Somali public.

The second is a bill establishing a National Meteorological Forecasting Authority. Its purpose is to create a national institution responsible for weather forecasting, issuing early warnings related to natural disasters, and supporting the country’s development planning.

The Speaker of the House of the People said passing the two bills is an important step in advancing state-building, improving the management of natural resources, and preparing for the impacts of climate change. The draft laws will now be forwarded to the Upper House to proceed through the constitutionally required legislative process.
