Lower House Speaker, MPs Agree to Strengthen Parliamentary Unity
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Speaker of Somalia’s House of the People and members of parliament have agreed on measures aimed at strengthening the unity and independence of the legislature following a meeting in Mogadishu.
The agreement was reached during a meeting on Sunday between House Speaker Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur and members of parliament.
The discussions focused on improving cooperation within the House and ensuring that parliamentary work is conducted in accordance with its rules and procedures.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the participants agreed that the House should remain neutral towards all political sides and that its internal rules should be respected and fully implemented.
The MPs and the Speaker also agreed to strengthen unity and cooperation among members, particularly in carrying out legislative duties and overseeing government institutions.
The agreement further reaffirmed the right of MPs to express their views and opinions, while stressing that such freedoms should be exercised in accordance with the House’s rules of procedure.
The participants also discussed the participation of MPs in parliamentary sessions. They agreed on the importance of members actively attending and taking part in sittings, in line with provisions governing parliamentary proceedings.
The meeting comes as Somalia’s federal parliament continues to play a central role in legislation and oversight as the country prepares for a transition towards a direct electoral system.
The House leadership and MPs called on all members to uphold the dignity and integrity of parliament, strengthen its independence and ensure that their work serves the interests of the Somali public.
The agreement represents an attempt to reinforce internal cohesion within the legislature and provide a clearer framework for cooperation between the Speaker and lawmakers.
