GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: A man convicted of killing a police commander in Mudug region was publicly executed by firing squad on Friday, less than 48 hours after the fatal shooting.

The man, identified as Ibrahim Ahmed Kooshin, was put to death in Jarriiban district after being found guilty of murdering the district’s police station commander, Guuleed Abdikadir Ali, known as “Kadleeye”.

Police said Kooshin was arrested shortly after the killing on Wednesday night and sentenced to death under the principle of qisas (retributive justice), with the sentence carried out in a public square on Friday morning.

The police commander was buried on Thursday, a day before the execution of his convicted killer.

The swift arrest, trial and execution have drawn widespread attention in Jarriiban and beyond, prompting debate over the speed of the judicial process.

Under Somalia’s legal system, courts may impose the death penalty in murder cases under qisas, which allows capital punishment where legal conditions are met. Human rights organisations have consistently called for stronger due process safeguards and a move away from the use of the death penalty.
