Kenyan senator denounces border wall
A Kenyan senator has denounced the construction of the wall along Kenya-Somali border as a threat to the socio-economic lives of residents living in the border towns.
Billow Kerrow, the Mandera senator said plan was mindless and without clear vision noting that it would damage the socio economics of the local population who are interconnected with their kin on either side of the border.
Kerow took issue with the motive behind Kenya’s decision to build the wall saying that it will not improve the security contrary to what officials have claimed.
“This plan is upside down, the government did not consult with anyone, as residents of these border regions nobody came to us for consultation. I don’t think that wall would bring any benefit,” he said.
The wall runs from Mandera county all the way to Lamu in the coastal region of Kenya and construction is on-going.
Kenyan government has insisted on constructing the wall in a bid to stop raids by Alshabab fighters who cross from the Somalia side of the border.
Somalia government, including the parliament has dismissed the idea and has written to Kenyan officials discouraging the plan.
