Mandera traders accused of funding Al-Shabaab fighters

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Mandera County, County Commissioner Fredrick Shisia said some of Mandera businessmen are funding Al-Shabaab fighters based in Somalia.

Shisia said Kenyan government had received intelligence that some of the traders operating in the county were paying taxes and protection fees to the terror gang domesticated in troubled Somalia.

He underscored that the action of  some members of the community to sympathise group will hinder the fight against terror.

“Anyone who is in communication with members of Al-Shabaab will be arrested and charged,” he warned.

Shisia noted that security forces were on the lookout for wives of Al-Shabaab from Jubaland who are planning to cross into Mandera after being kicked out of Jubbaland regions.

Attacks in border areas have been blamed on a porous frontier that assailants cross over easily to commit atrocities and slip back to the Somalia.

Mandera has been prone to attacks targeted at Christian faithful with the most recent being a raid at a residential block where six people lost their lives.
