Borehole project a relief to Borama town residents in Somaliland

Perennial water shortages is likely to end in Borama town, Somaliland, thanks to a water drilling project by a local water supply company.

Shaba Water Supply Company announced Saturday it has managed to pump water from boreholes in the town which could supply the much needed water to town.

Afraag borehole located about 17 Km from Borama town will be the second after Abu-qeys that previously served a population of nearly 40,000.

“We started a new major survey in the district to [precisely] determine the quantity of the water and thankfully the project ended successfully,” said an officer from Shaba.

The company said one of the boreholes has been fitted with solar panels for power.

“By the end of the week we shall be able to deliver water to you all,” the officer told the residents.

Shaba Water supply company said the projects are aimed at providing safe water to members of the local communities and  serve humanity and cater for their needs for social economic development.

“Water has always been scarce in Borama and areas around it. It is unbelievable that sweet water was within the reach of Borama people,” Shaba said.

The residents have been facing water shortages since before and after Siayad barre’s government.

Northern Somalia is one of the hottest and driest parts of Somalia and was hit by a devastating drought last year.
