Missile Strike Reported on Oil Tanker Near Oman
GOOBJOOG NEWS|OMAN: An oil tanker sailing off the coast of Oman was struck by a suspected missile or projectile on Monday, triggering a fire on board, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO).
The incident occurred about eight nautical miles east of Liima, Oman, as the tanker was traveling south through one of the region’s key shipping routes. UKMTO said it received reports that the vessel was hit by a missile or other projectile, causing a fire. No casualties or extent of the damage have been confirmed.
Maritime security authorities are investigating the incident, while ships operating in the area have been advised to exercise increased caution.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
The latest incident comes amid heightened security concerns across the Middle East’s strategic waterways, where commercial vessels have repeatedly come under attack in recent years. The region, particularly routes linked to the Gulf of Oman, the Arabian Sea, and the Red Sea, has experienced a series of maritime security incidents tied to regional conflicts and tensions.
Such attacks have raised concerns over the safety of international shipping and the uninterrupted flow of global energy supplies, as the surrounding waterways serve as critical corridors for the transport of oil and other goods.
