GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: Banaadir regional court in Mogadishu has announced a public sale of 30 tons of fish seized from illegal foreign trawlers.
The court said in a notice on Wednesday that companies that trade in fish can contact the court if they are interested to buy the catch.
The declaration follows a statement from the Attorney General on 17 March that 36 foreign fishermen had been arrested by the Somali coast guard for illegally fishing in Somali waters. The AG said the 36 individuals will face charges adding that all their wares including boats had been seized.
According to previous reports, Somalia loses between $100m and $450 million annually to illegal fishing carried out by foreign vessels.
