Mogadishu Governor Backs One-Person, One-Vote System

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The Governor of Somalia’s Banadir Region, Hassan Mohamed Hussein, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing a one-person, one-vote electoral system, calling it a cornerstone of Somalia’s democratic future.

Speaking at a public ceremony in Mogadishu’s Hodan District, Governor Hussein said the capital would lead efforts to establish citizen-elected administrations across the country. “Political power must return to the people. Every citizen has the right to vote and to be elected,” he said.

His remarks come as Somali leaders push to overhaul the electoral system, moving away from the clan-based model toward universal suffrage. The proposed shift aims to strengthen democratic representation and accountability at all levels of government.

In addition to the political message, the governor announced a series of infrastructure projects, including urgent road repairs in Mogadishu following damage from heavy rains. He said the initiatives are designed to respond to the city’s immediate needs while broader reforms take shape.

The Banadir administration’s dual focus on governance reform and service delivery highlights an effort to build public trust and improve living conditions as Somalia moves toward greater political stability.
