Mogadishu Launches Drainage-Led Road Overhaul to Curb Chronic Flooding
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Mogadishu’s municipal authorities have announced a major road reconstruction programme that will integrate modern drainage systems in an effort to permanently address chronic water stagnation that damages roads and disrupts traffic across the capital.
Banadir Governor and Mayor of Mogadishu Hassan Mohamed Hussein, known as Mungab, said the project will combine road rehabilitation with hydraulic infrastructure to manage rainwater runoff, shifting the city’s approach from short-term repairs to long-term urban planning.
The initiative, which is expected to begin soon, aims to protect road investments from seasonal flooding that has repeatedly eroded asphalt and hampered mobility in key parts of the city, the mayor said after inspecting several affected arterial roads.
Fagax Junction, one of Mogadishu’s most flood-prone intersections, has been designated a priority site and will be among the first areas to undergo reconstruction under the new model, officials said.
Mayor Mungab also reviewed ongoing road works, including the resurfacing of Jamhuuriya Road in the Kaaraan district, where a new asphalt layer is being laid. He said the inspections were intended to ensure construction quality and durability.
The administration said the programme is expected to improve traffic flow, reduce long-term maintenance costs and enhance urban resilience to heavy rains.
The mayor urged residents and businesses to help safeguard the new infrastructure, stressing that public cooperation would be essential to preserving roads and drainage systems once completed.
