Mogadishu on lockdown ahead of speaker’s election

Somalia’s capital Mogadishu is on lockdown ahead of Lower House election which is expected to take place today.
security in Mogadishu and the surrounding environs has been increased and hundreds of security forces have been deployed all the main roads of the city.

Among the candidates running for the parliament leadership is former parliament speaker, Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari.

The roads blocked include Maka al Mukarama, Sayidka, KM4 junction, Zoppe and the Airport Road.

Hundreds of members of the public were seen footing to places of work in Mogadishu as public transport become useless since movement was completely restricted.

The closure of these roads has had its worst effect on students and workers going to schools and business that are miles away from their residents.

After the election of the parliamentary leadership, the lawmakers will elect the country’s president on a date to be set later.

Over twenty candidates are running to become Somalia’s president who will then choose a prime minister.

The incumbent Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud is among dozens of candidates vying for the post of president, who will be elected by new lawmakers.
