Mogadishu mayor bans import of rickshaws in bid to ease traffic

No more auto rickshaws will be imported into Mogadishu, city mayor Abdirahman Osman has said.

Osman said in a statement Saturday the city administration would henceforth halt the importation of the three wheel vehicles locally known as bajaj.

The mayor said the move to ban the importation is aimed at de-congesting the city. He added that rickshaws operating in centres within the outskirts of the city will not be allowed to access the city centre.

Bajaj is a common mode of public transport in Mogadishu.
