Mogadishu Mayor Vows Action After Heavy Rains Flood Capital

GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: The mayor of Mogadishu and governor of the Banadir region, Mohamed Ahmed Amiin has pledged swift action, to address flooding across Somalia’s capital following recent rainfall that left parts of the city waterlogged.

Speaking at a press conference in Mogadishu, Mayor Amiin acknowledged that while the downpours had disrupted daily life in some districts, city authorities were actively managing the situation.

“Only a few areas remain affected by stagnant rainwater, and our teams are working to resolve the issues,” he told reporters.

The mayor also pointed to the broader challenges of urban infrastructure, stressing that road maintenance companies had been instructed to repair damage caused by the floods.

“Proper infrastructure is essential. We’ve ordered all contractors to immediately begin necessary repairs on damaged roads,” he said.

His comments come amid growing frustration from residents in flood-prone neighborhoods, where poor drainage systems have long contributed to seasonal flooding.

Citizens have increasingly called for sustainable urban planning and investment in water management systems.

Seasonal rains often strain Mogadishu’s aging infrastructure, highlighting a need for long-term strategies to protect the city’s nearly three million residents from recurring weather-related disruptions.
