GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Police in Mogadishu have rolled out tightened security measures as Somalia celebrates its 65th Independence Day today, urging citizens to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure a peaceful and orderly atmosphere.

The Banaadir Regional Police Command said preparations have been in place across the capital to manage large crowds, ease traffic congestion, and safeguard key public spaces as thousands gather for national commemorations.

While the full scope of the measures was not disclosed, officials confirmed increased deployments in central areas, road monitoring, and the regulation of access to celebration venues. They stressed that public safety is the top priority.

June 26 marks the day Somalia’s northern regions gained independence from British colonial rule in 1960, a historic step that led to the unification with the south and the birth of the Somali Republic.

The day is widely commemorated with cultural displays, public ceremonies, and patriotic gatherings in Mogadishu and beyond.

Police say updates on road closures and approved gathering points were released in advance to guide public movement. Authorities emphasized that these measures are standard practice during national events and are meant to ensure that the day passes without incident.

Officials expressed confidence that today’s Independence Day will be celebrated in a spirit of national pride and unity, as Somalis across the country and in the diaspora reflect on the legacy of their independence.
