MPs Push for Stronger Fiscal Accountability as 2026 Budget Review Advances
GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s review of the proposed 2026 national budget moved a step closer to approval on Thursday after the Joint Finance and Budget Committee concluded a detailed hearing with the Ministry of Finance, setting the stage for tighter fiscal oversight and clearer development priorities in the coming year.
Lawmakers from both houses used the session at Villa Hargeisa to press for stronger accountability measures, clearer spending justifications and more realistic revenue forecasts.
Their scrutiny is expected to shape the final version of the budget, influencing how national resources will be allocated across security, social services, infrastructure and economic reforms.
Finance Minister Bihi Iman Egeh told the committee that the government’s revenue gains in recent years now provide a stronger base for funding essential services. His responses, according to committee members, helped clarify the fiscal direction for 2026 and offered assurances on transparent resource management.
The outcome of the hearing strengthens Parliament’s influence over the budget process and underscores a shift toward more disciplined financial governance.
The committee’s recommendations will now guide revisions to the draft budget before it proceeds to full parliamentary debate.
If endorsed, the 2026 budget is expected to reinforce Somalia’s development agenda by improving service delivery, supporting economic stability and aligning national spending with long-term recovery and state-building goals.
