GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has reappointed Dr. Hassan Mohamed Hussein Muungaab as the Governor of Banadir Region and Mayor of Mogadishu, returning a seasoned official to the post at a critical time for the capital’s development and security.

The appointment, effective Wednesday, follows a recommendation from the Ministry of Interior and is aimed at accelerating urban reforms, public service delivery, and community reconciliation in Mogadishu – a city at the heart of Somalia’s state-building agenda.

President Mohamud cited Dr. Muungaab’s prior achievements and extensive experience in governance as key reasons for the decision, urging him to prioritize urban development, improve coordination between residents and security forces, and expand access to essential services.

“This is a significant responsibility,” the President said, calling on all government institutions to fully support the new Banadir administration.

Dr. Muungaab previously served in the same role, where he was credited with spearheading infrastructure projects and strengthening local institutions during a formative period in Mogadishu’s post-conflict recovery.

His return comes amid renewed government efforts to stabilize and modernize the capital, which remains central to Somalia’s political and economic trajectory. Authorities expect his leadership to bolster service delivery and institutional capacity in the Banadir region.
