National Communications Authority Holds Consultative Meeting On Draft Consumer Protection Regulations
GOOBJOOG NEWS|MOGADISHU: The National Communications Authority held a one-day consultative meeting to gather feedback and review the draft Communications Consumer Protection Regulations.
The session brought together telecommunications operators, internet service providers, submarine cable companies, consumer representatives, and other key stakeholders to examine the structure of the draft and provide recommendations on its effective implementation.
The consultation highlighted the policy objectives, guiding principles, and key provisions contained in the draft regulations.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, the Director General of the National Communications Authority, Mustafa Yasin Sheikh, underscored the need to strengthen consumer trust as Somalia’s digital market continues to expand.
“A fair, transparent, and accountable communications environment is essential for building public trust and supporting the country’s digital transformation. Protecting consumer rights is a shared responsibility between the Authority and service providers,” he said.
The draft regulations establish clear safeguards for consumer rights and service quality standards. They aim to enhance transparency in pricing and contractual terms, define the obligations and compliance requirements for operators, and set out enforcement measures and penalties to ensure accountability across the telecommunications sector.
Stakeholders provided input on implementation challenges, proposed timelines, and compliance preparedness. The meeting also reviewed findings from the Consumer Protection Survey and discussed the roadmap for finalizing and enforcing the regulations.
The National Communications Authority said it will consider all recommendations submitted before issuing the final version of the Communications Consumer Protection Regulations. The Authority reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a competitive, secure, and consumer-centered telecommunications market across the country.
