New AU Mission Commander Vows to Step up Stabilization Efforts in Somalia

MOGADISHU, Xinhua: Edward Banda, newly appointed commander of the Kenyan troops serving with the African Union (AU) Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM), has pledged to help improve stability in the country.
Banda, who has assumed office, said on Sunday that the AU troops will continue to collaborate with the Somali Security Forces and the local communities in fostering trust, cooperation, and mutual respect.
“Our primary goal remains to support our neighbor Somalia in its efforts to achieve peace, stability, and prosperity for its people,” Banda said in a statement issued in the Somali capital of Mogadishu.
Banda, who succeeded Seif Salim Rashid, reaffirmed their commitment to the mission mandate and objectives outlined by the AU, the international community, the Somali government, and, by extension, the federal member states whom they are entrusted to support.
During the handover ceremony at the AUSSOM Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) headquarters in Dhobley, southern Somalia, Rashid emphasized the significance of implementing the AU’s mandate to ensure the mission’s success in Somalia.
“The core focus of our presence in this mission is to unequivocally fulfill the African Union’s mandate. It’s crucial that everyone understands the specifics of this mandate because a good soldier is one who is knowledgeable,” Rashid said in his address to the outgoing and incoming troops.
He told the troops to focus more on operational matters, as it is vital to understand what is happening and gather intelligence about their surroundings.
Banda, who acknowledged the outgoing contingent’s contributions, highlighted the responsibility that has been bestowed upon his team to ensure peace and stability in Somalia. He urged the newly deployed troops to remain vigilant and adaptable, prioritizing personnel and civilian safety while upholding professional standards and human rights.
Prior to his deployment to Somalia, Banda served as commander of the eighth Brigade of the KDF.
