GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s Deputy Prime Minister Saleh Ahmed Jama on Wednesday presided over the official handover of office to the new Mayor of Mogadishu and Governor of Banadir Region, Hassan Mohamed Hussein.

The ceremony in the capital marked the end of Mohamed Ahmed Amiir’s tenure, with federal officials praising the peaceful transition as a sign of growing administrative stability.

The Banadir Governor also serves as mayor of Mogadishu, making the post a central pillar in the city’s governance, security, and development.

Speaking at the event, Jama said the government is committed to introducing local elections in Mogadishu, allowing residents to choose their leaders directly.

“We are committed to returning the mandate of the people to the Somali people living in the capital,” he said.

Jama called on Hussein to focus on improving city security, public cleanliness, and delivery of basic services. He also urged the new mayor to lead with honesty and integrity as the city navigates ongoing urban and political challenges.

Hussein, a former mayor of Mogadishu, returns to office at a time when the capital is under pressure to reform its institutions and expand citizen participation in local governance.
