GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia has signed a new cooperation agreement with the European Union Capacity Building Mission in Somalia (EUCAP Somalia) aimed at strengthening the country’s maritime safety and improving the efficiency of its ports.

Under the deal, the EU will support the equipping of Somalia’s Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), a key facility responsible for managing sea rescue operations along one of Africa’s longest coastlines. The project is expected to improve Somalia’s capacity to respond to maritime emergencies and enhance coordination for ships operating in its waters.

Minister of Ports and Marine Transport Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur said the agreement marks an important step in modernizing Somalia’s maritime sector and reinforcing the country’s sovereignty over its territorial waters.

“The Federal Government is committed to transforming our ports into regional trade hubs and ensuring safety at sea,” he said during the signing ceremony.

The agreement also supports ongoing efforts to strengthen operations at the Port of Mogadishu, a critical gateway for Somalia’s imports and exports.

The signing was attended by senior officials from the ministry, including Director General Ahmed Yusuf Abdulle, Port Director Ambassador Mohamed Ali Nur (Americo), and EU Ambassador to Somalia Francesca Di Mauro.
