GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s National Communications Authority (NCA) took a decisive step on Monday toward reshaping the country’s digital future, launching a high-level consultative meeting to develop a regulatory framework for submarine cable landings.

The initiative is seen as a game-changer for Somalia’s ambitions to become a major digital gateway for East Africa, leveraging its extensive 3,300-kilometer coastline along one of the world’s busiest maritime data routes.

“Submarine cables are the arteries of the global internet,” said Eng. Mohamed Hussein Ahmed, Director General of the NCA. “By regulating how they land and operate in Somalia, we are laying the groundwork for secure, resilient, and world-class digital infrastructure.”

The meeting brought together key players from government, telecom companies, and international partners to shape policies that align with global best practices while advancing Somalia’s national priorities.

Once operationalized, the framework is expected to boost internet speeds, reduce costs, attract tech investment, and position Somalia as a strategic connectivity hub between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

The NCA will continue consultations to finalize legislation that ensures both security and innovation as the country accelerates its digital transformation.
