NIEC to present certificates of registration to 3 more political parties

The National Independent Electoral Commission (NIEC) will today present certificates of temporary registration to three more political parties adding to ten the number of political parties so far temporarily registered in the country.

NIEC chairperson Halima Yarey told Goobjoog News she would be issuing the certificates to TIIR party headed by former minister Salah Sheikh Osman and Wadajir Party by former minister and 2016 presidential candidate Abdirahman Abdishakur. The other party is SAMU whose details of registration were not immediately available.

NIEC presented certificates of temporary registration to seven political parties December 4, 2017. The parties were the first to be registered in 50 years in Somalia as the country transitions into multi-party democracy.

In order to acquire temporary registration, one must present the name of the party and symbol not currently in use and written constitution that sets out the objectives of the party with relevant clauses for settling internal political party disputes. A fee of $500 is also required in addition to a signed code of conduct pledging to observe the application of the Political Party Law, and other laws of the country.

In addition, those who intend to register must also present adopted minutes of the first meeting of members of the party.
