OIC Pledges Stronger Support as Somalia Outlines Security, Economic Progress

GOOBJOOG NEWS | DOHA: Somalia has secured renewed political and development backing from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), following a high-level ministerial meeting in Doha that highlighted the country’s strides in stability and reform.
Speaking at the summit, Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali laid out key national milestones, including the transfer of 23 international military bases to Somali control and the training of 20,000 new security personnel, as evidence of Somalia’s improving capacity to manage its own security.
The two-day OIC Contact Group meeting concluded with strong commitments to bolster Somalia’s recovery, particularly in logistics, surveillance, and counter-terror capabilities. Member states also endorsed Somalia’s push for deeper economic engagement under the National Transformation Plan and Vision 2060.
The forum marked a shift from pledges to implementation. Somalia welcomed the operationalization of the OIC’s new Special Fund for Development and proposed a dedicated monitoring mechanism to ensure accountability and results.
Diplomats and development partners praised Somalia’s post-debt-relief growth and improving investment climate, with new interest reported in infrastructure and energy projects. Political advances, including federalization, constitutional review, and electoral preparations, were also cited as signs of resilience.
“The level of coordination and alignment coming out of this meeting signals a turning point,” said one OIC official. “Somalia is not just asking for help, it’s presenting a framework for sustainable partnership.”
Minister Abdi Ali concluded by thanking host nation Qatar and OIC members, reiterating Somalia’s goal of becoming a peaceful, self-reliant state.
