GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU:Lawmakers in the House of the People of the Federal Parliament of Somalia on Tuesday approved the Tobacco Control Bill following a formal parliamentary session in Mogadishu.

The Bill, presented by the Ministry of Health, is aimed at strengthening national efforts to curb tobacco use and protect public health, with a particular focus on safeguarding children and young people.

During the session, members of parliament held an extensive debate on the health, social, and economic impact of tobacco consumption in the country. Several lawmakers highlighted the growing burden of tobacco-related illnesses and the long-term costs they pose to families and the national health system.

The Ministry of Health said the approval of the Bill marks a significant step toward adopting modern health policies and legislation aligned with international agreements. Officials noted that the framework prioritizes the prevention of non-communicable diseases linked to tobacco use, which continue to rise in Somalia and the wider region.

The Bill was passed by a clear majority vote, with 139 lawmakers voting in favour, while a small number abstained. The vote reflects broad parliamentary support for stronger tobacco control measures as part of Somalia’s wider public health agenda.

Once fully implemented, the legislation is expected to provide a legal and policy foundation for tighter regulation of tobacco products, increased public awareness, and stronger protections for vulnerable groups across the country.
