GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Somalia’s House of the People has approved a revised law aimed at strengthening efforts to combat piracy and kidnapping, updating a measure first enacted in 1975.

All 140 lawmakers present voted in favor of the bill to amend Law No. 36, with no votes against and no abstentions. The legislation is intended to modernize legal tools used to prosecute piracy networks and hostage-taking operations, both on land and at sea.

Officials said the update reflects current security challenges and will support ongoing efforts to protect civilians, safeguard maritime routes and reinforce rule of law across the country.

The bill will now proceed to the Upper House for further consideration before being sent to the President for assent.
