GOOBJOOG NEWS | TANGIER, Morocco: Federal Government of Somalia’s Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre has urged African and Global South nations to pursue new forms of economic and technological cooperation, including an African-led maritime alliance and a dedicated investment fund for developing countries.

Speaking at the opening of the MEDays International Forum, PM Barre said a continent-driven Maritime Alliance linking African states with Atlantic nations would help secure key sea routes and strengthen trade flows.

He also proposed a direct maritime trade corridor between East Africa and Morocco, calling it a strategic step toward deeper integration between the continent’s eastern and northern economies.

Barre urged Global South governments to back a “Global South Investment Fund” to finance infrastructure and development projects without the constraints often associated with traditional lending.

Such a mechanism, he said, would allow developing nations to set their own priorities and reduce dependency on external financing conditions.

On technology, the Somali leader called for the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Forum for the Global South. He said emerging AI systems must reflect the languages, cultures and interests of southern nations to avoid deepening global digital divides.

Barre, accompanied by Somalia’s Foreign Minister Abdisalam Abdi Ali, is among the senior leaders attending the MEDays Forum, which has drawn policymakers and international figures to discuss global economic and geopolitical shifts.

The prime minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the event to advance Somalia’s diplomatic and economic interests and build new partnerships.
