GOOBJOOG NEWS | MOGADISHU: Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre on Thursday launched the construction of a new Science and Technology Centre at SIMAD University in Mogadishu, in a move aimed at strengthening higher education, research and technical skills development in the country.

The facility is expected to expand opportunities for Somali students in science, technology and innovation, as the government seeks to improve the quality of education and equip young people with skills relevant to the country’s development needs.

Speaking at the launch, PM Barre highlighted the role of universities and educational institutions in driving social and economic progress, stressing the importance of modern learning facilities that provide students with practical knowledge and skills.

He commended SIMAD University and its management for expanding educational opportunities, particularly in science, technology and research, and called for stronger links between academic training, innovation and the needs of society and the labour market.

The prime minister said the development of quality universities and schools formed part of Somalia’s National Transformation Plan, which seeks to strengthen education and produce graduates equipped to contribute to national development.

The project is being implemented through a partnership between SIMAD University and the international humanitarian organisation Direct Aid, as part of broader efforts to improve higher education infrastructure and create an enabling environment for scientific learning and technological advancement.

The new centre is expected to support the development of young Somali talent and strengthen access to modern scientific and technological education as the country works to expand its skilled workforce.

PM Barre also praised security agencies and residents of Mogadishu for their efforts to maintain stability in the capital, noting that security remains important for educational development, investment and broader economic growth.
